Look Up!
The Hill of Provision
Think about Abraham and Isaac. Abraham was promised a son in his old age. I’m talking 100 years old, y’all not just tired, but ancient. And yet, God delivered on that promise with Isaac. Then, years later, God asked Abraham to do the unthinkable: to offer that very son back to Him as a sacrifice.
And what did Abraham do? He obeyed. He walked up the hill with his son, trusting God even when it didn’t make sense. That moment had to feel crushing, confusing, and heartbreaking. But right when Abraham was about to go through with it, God stepped in.
“But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, ‘Abraham, Abraham!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.’ He said, ‘Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God.’”
(Genesis 22:11–12, ESV)
And then, Abraham looked up and there it was. A ram caught in the thicket. A provision already waiting.
God had provided.
The Hill of Revelation
Later in the New Testament, Jesus stood on a hill too. But this time, He wasn’t about to offer a sacrifice. He was about to offer truth. It was on that hill that He gave us the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7), teaching people how to live, how to love, and how to walk with God.
The religious leaders had been teaching rule after rule, burden after burden. Jesus flipped it all on its head. He showed us it’s not just about following law, it’s about following Him. From that hill, He taught us to forgive our enemies, give without show, and seek God first.
It wasn’t just a message, it was a revelation. And it still changes lives today.
The Hill of Redemption
But the most powerful hill of all? Calvary.
Jesus carried the cross up a hill so we wouldn’t have to carry the weight of sin any longer. He laid down His life so we could pick up freedom, grace, and everlasting hope.
“And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him…”
(Luke 23:33, ESV)
Jesus said it plainly:
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
(Matthew 16:24, ESV)
The hill became a place of redemption, a place where death lost its grip and love had the final word.
So Why "The Hill"?
Because hills in the Bible were never just physical places. They were moments of decision. Turning points. Encounters with God.
That’s why the foundation of our church is rooted in Psalm 121:
“I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.”
(Psalm 121:1–2, ESV)
The rest of the psalm reminds us that God never sleeps on us. He watches over us day and night. He guards our lives and our coming and going forever.
So Let Me Ask You... What Are You Looking At?
Sometimes we’re so focused on what’s going wrong, or what we’re trying to control, that we forget where our help truly comes from.
We’re filling our lives with everything but God:
Shopping bags instead of surrender
Instagram instead of intimacy with Him
Addictions instead of adoration
Distractions instead of devotion
We’re quick to cry out for deliverance, but most of the time, the only thing getting delivered is our Amazon package.
But what if we stopped looking around... and started looking up?
Let’s Make It Personal
Are you dealing with a tough season in your marriage?
Is your health failing?
Are your kids struggling?
Are you chasing success but still feel empty?
Look up.
God is not absent. He’s present. He’s ready. And He’s near.
He is our Creator.
He is our Provider.
He is our Keeper.
So where else would we look?
Let This Be Our Posture
The Hill isn’t just the name of a church, it’s the posture of our hearts.
This is a house that reminds people where their help comes from.
When life hurts, when storms rage, when things don’t make sense, we choose to look up.
Because when we look up, we see the One who never fails us.
Our help comes from the Lord!
